Hello again!
Today, I'm very proud to present our biggest update yet. As of today, Gdsk! now supports gOS 3.1!
For the uninitiated, gOS was a line of Linux distributions aiming for a slightly more mainstream audience via sleek looks and quality of life features. One of these features was Google Gadgets for Linux, which immediately put it on our radar.
The history of gOS is quite interesting, so if you'd like to learn more why not take a look at this fantastic video on the topic by Michael MJD!
Anyways, let's talk about the changes made to Gdsk! in this update.
The first change that you're likely to notice is that we've completely redone the download page. We've made the design much more appealing (and added downloads for gOS).
We've also made various changes to the online gadget gallery to better support Google Gadgets for Linux. On any gadget's details page, you will now see an added "Platforms" tag, indicating which platforms that gadget can run on.
To help you better find gadgets for your platform, we've also updated the filter options, so you can now choose to only view gadgets that support your platform.
Now let's talk about the patcher.
The Gdsk! Patcher for gOS is a small program written in Python, that will patch Google Gadgets for Linux to use Gdsk! services. Notably, it does not install Google Gadgets like its Windows sibling would, as gOS already comes with it.
In addition to patching Google Gadgets, it will offer to automatically update the gadget list for you. You'll almost certainly want to do this, as Google Gadgets will wait about a week before doing it by itself.
As a quality of life bonus, it will also offer to patch gOS' package manager to point to the package archives, as the original is long gone by now. Like the gadget list update, this is completely optional, though I can't see any reason why you wouldn't want to.
I think that just about covers it! I hope you'll enjoy these new additions!
